A groundbreaking study from NYU Langone Health is challenging one of the most persistent and painful myths in autism research—that a mother’s health during pregnancy causes autism in her child. After analyzing over 1.1 million pregnancies, researchers found no convincing evidence linking common maternal health issues—like infections, depression, or other illnesses—to a child’s autism diagnosis.
The research, published in Nature Medicine, adds to a growing body of science showing that autism is largely influenced by genetic factors and prenatal development, not something parents “do wrong” during pregnancy. These findings are especially important because they validate what many experts have long believed: autism is not caused by maternal behavior or illness.
Many Mothers Carry Guilt—This Study Says They Shouldn’t
For years, mothers of children with autism have carried emotional weight they should never have had to bear—asking themselves what they could have done differently during pregnancy. This study helps lay those fears to rest.
The data clearly shows that while some maternal conditions appear linked to autism at first glance, those associations vanish when accounting for genetics, parental age, and shared family factors. In fact, similar autism links were found when analyzing paternal health conditions—further proving that underlying family genetics, not pregnancy health alone, are the key factor.
The Real Origin of Autism: Genetics and Early Development
Researchers emphasized that over 350 genes are already known to play a role in autism and developmental delays, many of which occur spontaneously at conception and are not inherited from the parents.
In rare cases where complications during pregnancy are statistically associated with autism, the study’s authors believe these are not causes, but rather early signs of autism-related development that is already underway.
In other words: autism begins before birth—but not because of a mother’s actions.
