For decades, many parents—especially mothers—have carried unnecessary guilt over their child’s autism diagnosis. A new landmark study may finally put some of that to rest. Researchers analyzing over 1.1 million pregnancies have concluded that most maternal health issues during pregnancy do not cause autism, challenging a long-standing belief in autism research and popular culture.

Published in Nature Medicine, this study used Denmark’s comprehensive national health database to explore more than 1,700 potential maternal health conditions. After accounting for critical variables like genetics, environmental exposure, and access to care, researchers found that nearly all supposed links between a mother’s health and her child’s autism can be explained by other factors—not the pregnancy conditions themselves.

A Closer Look at What Doesn’t Cause Autism

Among the thousands of diagnoses reviewed, everything from maternal depression to hypertension initially appeared to have a statistical relationship to autism. But once researchers corrected for age, socioeconomic status, co-occurring conditions, and especially familial genetic links, those associations faded.

Even more telling: the same autism risk patterns appeared in fathers with similar diagnoses. Since fathers don’t directly impact fetal development during pregnancy, this strongly supports the idea that genetic factors, not maternal health conditions, are the driving force behind most autism cases.

The only remaining link? Pregnancy complications related to the fetus. But even this, researchers say, likely reflects early signs of autism-related development—not a cause.

The Takeaway: Autism Begins Prenatally, But Not Because of the Mother

The message from this study is clear: autism is a neurodevelopmental condition that likely starts before birth, but most maternal health issues during pregnancy are not to blame. This is a major step toward removing the stigma and emotional burden many mothers face.

It’s time we stop asking, “What went wrong?” and start focusing on how we can support children and families in the ways that matter most.
